Fellow soldiers it is difficult
for me to find words to express to you my deep feelings about the 440th
Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, and all the men who have served with
this command.
The cities and towns, the plains and prairies, the mountains and valleys
of America you left to serve your country never produced better men
or finer soldiers. You came from all walks of life willing and full
of determination to do your best, your mission has been accomplished
with distinction and honor. As a soldier of the greatest Army history
has ever known you have made the United States of America the guardian
and protector of a better and finer world in which to live. The far
horizons now look brighter and clearer for those who were oppressed
and enslaved and the future safety and tranquility of peace loving people
once again seems secure.
"Mud. Dust, and Five Stars" is the history of your Battalion.
Many individuals and their contributions may only be recorded in that
great unpublished book of unsung heroes. Those good soldiers who did
their duty to the best of their ability are too numerous to even mention,
but will always be remembered as the real heroes of this Battalion.
Let us not forget the orphan, the widow, and the loved ones of our departed
hero dead, or our comrades who were maimed and handicapped in battle;
their sorrow and affliction will linger long after we return to our
homes and firesides. May the passing of time and the care of Almighty
God comfort them and heal their sorrow and bind up their wounds.
It has been a rare privilege and distinction to serve with you as your
commanding officer and I wish each of you God speed for the future.
